The "Tres Amigos" (Myself, Karen, and my Dad) have done a lot of fun things together, including an epic Baja California Sur trip last August, but we hadn't yet gone to Tijuana together. The Tijuana crew is always Abe (+Koya Dog/Bear), Karen, and I but we convinced my Dad to come see what TJ was all about... for us. We didn't plan any crazy events for the day in order to ease his nerves but knew by the end of the day he would want to go back soon.
Just our luck, it was a Rainy Day in TJ! Abe and I have had the luck of doing several rainy days in TJ and have grown to appreciate it. My Dad drove and we had him park in my usual illegal spot where I don't pay and I pray not to be towed (please knock on wood for me). My Dad had never walked across the border and I felt he needed the unique experience and I didn't want to wait 2 hours to cross back by car.
We hit the usual spots for an easy day trip. Just over the Tijuana river onto Revo, we stopped for 36 tacos at Taco Fish (once known as Taco Gloria but neither of those names are the actual name which we can't pronounce or remember). 3x$1 amazing street tacos and 3x$2.50 Pacifico's make for a great start to a rainy day in TJ. Since we have been going to Taco Fish for years, we did what good tourists do and write our names on a dollar bill to hang on their wall. Unfortunately due to the weather, our second pit stop of fresh churros for $1 was not available.
Next stop, Casa Del Habano. Yes, I hang out on Avenida Revolucion and I love it. No, I don't go to the typical spots most 24 year olds would. Casa Del Habano happened to have their grand opening of their new lounge they just built directly next door. It worked out perfectly! They brought in a famous Cuban cigar roller from Partagas and their director of quality control. What that means is we all got to smoke some of the best cigars of our life... in Tijuana on a rainy day! They had amazing catered appetizers and their customer service is always top notch. Moises the manager will help you pick the perfect cigar for your pallet and George the "MOJITO MAN" will make the best Mojito you will ever taste (trust me, it is the best). After two cigars, 3-4 strong Mojito's, and a great Cuban party, we do the "Tijuana Shuffle" out of their and see that God let the sun shine through for a short time.
Directly across the street is my good friend's silver shop and Mexican art shop. Jorge Espinosa does amazing work and has a great collection of Mexican art to show and tell you about. I introduced my Dad to him for the first time and they got along great. One big problem though, Jorge has a cat name Junior and we have a giant beardog named Koya. Koya is a big baby, and Junior loves to kick her ass. We have witnessed a couple fights between them before, so we immediately sit Koya down outside Junior's territory and put Junior in the back. Even with those precautions, you can feel the tension in the room. After a little socializing, we all wanted one last Mojito.
Before heading back to Casa Del Habano, I wanted to find some of the ingredients to the Best Margarita that the Tres Amigos had in Todos Santos, BCS. Lucky for us, my friend's liquor store across the street had Damiana and a Mexican brand of Controy for extremely cheap compared to US prices. We then had our final Mojito and said goodbye to everyone including the man who was addicted to beardogs like Koya (New Foundland) who showed us his tattoo of his dogs on his back. Crazy coincedence, but a lot of fun.
We started the walk back, looking forward to a couple more tacos at Taco Fish. My Dad and I grabbed a quick shot of tequila, then caught up with Karen and Abe to realize Taco Fish closed up early... probably due to the rain. Oh well, everything happens for a reason so we kept walking. We stopped and hassled the churro stand by the border line to get the same price we would have just 100 yards away and we won. Now it was time to wait in line... except for me.
I have what is called a SENTRI pass, and it gets me through what you could call a "fast track" lane which that night had no one in it. So Karen, my Dad, and Abe wait in about a 10-15 minute line while I walk right up and show ID. Immediately after walking through the line, I hear something drop and break! I look down to find the liquor I came to get that day, Damiana, had somehow fallen out of my bag and the plastic cap broke off. I immediately picked it up just in time to save most of the contents (very lucky), but there was definitely a mess on the ground. I look up in shame at about 10 border agents staring directly at me, several laughing. I try to apologize but to my surprise, they didn't seem angy. Their exact response was "Don't worry about it, it smells great!" I couldn't believe what I just heard, so I got out of their while my luck was back up. Damiana is a floral liquour from Mexico that smells amazing and I imagine was quite a relief from the wet people smell that had been crossing the border all day. Everything happens for a reason.

The Best Margarita
Happy National Margarita Day! Although I haven't posted in a few weeks, I wanted to be sure and give everyone a heads up on how to create the best margarita. Here is the recipe from the famous Mr. Margarita himself in Todos Santos at his restaurant Tequila Sunrise.
Unfortunately "Damiana" is very hard to find in the US so I went down to Tijuana a couple weeks ago and purchased a bottle for $14!!! If you order online in the US you will pay over $60 per bottle. I also purchased a bottle of Mexican branded Cointreau (Controy) for only $8!!! I can't wait to enjoy many Pure Margaritas in the next few weeks. Happy National Margarita Day! Please enjoy responsibly.
- Wet the rim of a Margarita glass using a slice of key lime (do not use water!)
- Salt the rim of the glass
- Fill glass 3/4 full with large ice cubes (about 3 oz of ice)
- Add 3 oz of quality blanco/silver/plata tequila from 100% de agave. The El Capricho tequila is what was used in Todos Santos.
- Add 1 oz of Cointreau
- Add 1 oz of Damiana liqeuer
- Squeeze 4 key limes into the drink, add a lime slice to the rim and "stir slowly" with a straw.
- Throw the straw away and enjoy the best and most "pure margarita" you will ever have.
